It isn't 'realistic' and when you put it in that box it is insanely awkward. Hence why people get their knickers in a twist over the culture changes in Humankind each era. However in games like Civ or Humankind where there is less obvious abstraction people get confused and expect stuff that is clearly game design mechanics derived from history for flavor to be 'historical'. The difference for instance between games like the Paradox games and Ozymandius is stark. The 'historical' bits are there for flavor and context. It uses portions of the world map and empire names that are historical but it is more obvious it isn't really meant to be historical because it is so abstracted (though some Steam kiddies definitely get confused even in so obvious an abstraction). Ultimately a simple but beautifully designed strategic puzzle game. But it isn't historical and failing to see that the historical references are just window dressing distracts people from the best parts of the game! If you look at the 'historical' part of Humankind as historical it is boring and awkward and inconsistent.
